Octopod politicians

Roy Kowng

Do you guys know who he is? His name is Roy Kwong, a member of the Democratic party whereas a councilman from the Yuen Long district council, also being a writer, film director and dancer. To clarify myself, I am not trying to promote for any of those political parties in Hong Kong, what I am trying to do is to point out an interesting phenomenon behind.

You may be wonder, how can this young man being able to possess multiple identities and occupations at the same time and what are the reasons behind? In his career, he had attempted several innovative ways to express his political view. To be specific, he tried once using hip hop dance to promote himself during the district council election, and at last he won the title. He continuously updates himself on facebook by writing short stories and articles that makes him quite popular on the internet. He directed a short romantic film, which later be applauded by a Taiwanese website and made him famous among Taiwanese youngsters.

Popularity sort of explains everything. In a democratic society, popularity decides which party are going to run the society. Even though Hong Kong has not yet became a perfect democratic society yet, political parties still want to gain as much popularity as they can, in order to gain maximum bargaining power over certain issues. Therefore, to gain the support from the youngsters is being vital.

Roy Kwong is just an example of how Hong Kong political current is moving, and this is how the world trend is moving. For example, English Prime Minister David Cameron appeared on one of the most famous band One Direction’s music video, that kind of shows that gaining popularity among youngsters by using innovative and creative ways has become an international trend. Maybe one day, you can see Kim Jong Un on Green Day’s music video, who knows?
