After Ever after

“…and they live happily ever after.” This is a sentence we always hear when we grow up as most of the fairy tales end with it. A YouTuber Jon Cozart has made a cappella Disney parody video about what happened after “ever after”.

Soon this video goes viral and until now (15.10.2013) it has got 21,491,830 views and more then 500,000 likes. The reason why it has became so popular perhaps is that many people growing up with Disney stories and which grab their attentions to the video. Also, this video is more than just entertaining or having fun. It criticizes some international social issues and current news, which makes the video meaningful. It contains 4 parts. First it’s the story of little mermaid, which criticizes the incident of British petroleum ltd oil spilling in Gulf of Mexico. Second part is the story of Aladdin. It is about the cruel treatment that U.S. soldiers did to the people living in Afghanistan. Third is the story of Beauty and the beast, which is about the hunting witches act in the 16^th century in Europe as well as the law that under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), there is nothing there to prosecute bestiality and which PETA is totally opposed to. Lastly, the story of Pocahontas is used to criticize the inhumane act towards Native Americans. As it is popular, there is the translated version.

In the original lyric and also comparing both lyrics, bilingualism features could be found. First, in the lyrics, the author uses a Spanish word while telling the story of Pocahontas, which is “amigos adios” meaning goodbye friend. Minimal bilingualism is shown as the one-word code switching is exploiting the symbolic function of the language. The purpose of using Spanish word is only to create the image of the Spanish but not to target the language users.

 

Also, through the translation process, a certain features have occurred due to perhaps two reasons. First is that the translator tries to portrait the same humorous feeling for the Chinese audiences. For instance, “Here’s what happened after all their dreams came true.” is translated into本台獨家揭露公主美夢成真後的生活實況. This is much more than the original meaning but at the same time keeping the same meaning. Second, the translator wants to emphasize the image through language mixing. For example, “Aladdin was taken by the CIA” is translated into “CIA就這樣把阿拉丁抓走” and in which “CIA” is kept in the Chinese version.
